Pastor--Rev. Dave Matsumura -
I grew up in Hawaii as part of a family of seven children and two parents. My mother was the religious force in my early years and we faithfully attended the Baptist church all through my youth. I was fortunate enough to attend a private Episcopal High School, then a Presbyterian related college in Spokane, Washington. The guiding key for me throughout my faith journey has been my mother’s advice that we are Christians before we are Baptists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Catholics or whatever. Our allegiance is first to God, then to the denomination that we prefer. That is what we are trying to do at Hope Church. Our allegiance is first to God. Once we have that firmly in our hearts and minds we can live courageously and learn from each other how best to serve God. All of us bring strengths and weaknesses from the traditions of our past. Together we can discover, examine, and implement all of the best strengths for our spiritual journeys. This is why we emphasize education as a life long habit of the heart and music and worship as a vital part of our spirituality. This is also why we serve a diversity of people while serving God in mission activities. My hope is that you will find a place of comfort, support, and spiritual deepening among us and that you will discover what God is calling you to be and do while we are together at Hope Church.  Welcome to Hope’s growing family!

I've only just recently become the Christian Education Director, but I’ve been worshipping at Hope for over 20 years. We were between pastors when my family first visited, but members made us feel so welcome and comfortable, and interestingly enough, I actually joined the CE committee before I ever officially became a member of Hope. I’ve been involved with faith education at Hope ever since – from Nursery care to Adult Education.

My husband Randy and I have raised our 3 children, Julia, Shayla & Scott at Hope.  We feel like our kids got a great start in their faith and walk with the Lord in their involvement in Sunday School, VBS, Youth Group and Worship.

My hope for our Christian Education program is that more and more individuals and families would have the opportunity to learn and grow in their faith through our educational programming. I dream of having 100% of our members involved in some form of individual and corporate faith study, whether it be Sunday School, Bible Study, Small Group or something else.  I’d love to see us be a place where visitors feel welcome and immediately see a spot in our educational program that they are meant to fill.  I believe that to reach our full God-given potential, requires lifelong study.  Whether you are young, old or somewhere in between; and whether you are new in faith or a lifelong believer, there's more to learn.

We serve such an awesome God, don’t we!  And we are meant to study his word together, and to laugh, love and grow together, in faith.
